MY FAVOURITE ISLAND

I have lived in Thailand for the past 12 years and I am often asked what are my favorite Thai islands. My answer often surprises people but the truth is, my favorite island is Bali, and my favorite place in Bali is Ubud. Let me tell you why.

Bali is a gem among thousands of other islands in the Indonesian archipelago. Its cultural history sets it apart, giving it a mystical richness that few other places in the world can equal. Bali has been inhabited for at least 4,000 years, and Balinese culture was strongly influenced by Indian, Chinese, and particularly Hindu culture, beginning around the 1st century AD.

The Hindu Majapahit Empire on eastern Java founded a Balinese colony in 1343. When the empire declined, there was an exodus of intellectuals, artists, priests, and musicians from Java to Bali in the 15th century. It was these people who set the foundation for the amazing cultural and religious tradition you can still observe today. This deep history means that every visit to Bali holds something new for me, a continual learning experience that brings more joy and wonder to life.

Then there are the tropical forested mountains filled with waterfalls, exotic birds and butterflies, and the legendary beaches with blue waters, fantastic diving and incredible surfing. In few other places can you climb a volcano to watch the sun rise and later snorkel among schools of tropical fish in the afternoon.

Set in the lush mountains among green rice fields, but less than an hour drive from amazing beaches, Ubud is the perfect place to spend my Bali vacation time. I also love the abundant dining options and wide variety of yoga studios in Ubud. The astounding choice of Ubud villas makes each visit exciting and new. There are hundreds of villas in Ubud to choose from, ranging from budge-friendly hideaways, to luxury 5-star Ubud villas fit for A-list celebrities and splurging honeymooners.

Some people return again and again to their favorite Ubud villa, while others try a new villa on each visit. Either way, the combination of a unique culture, a stunning natural environment and the excellent options for Ubud accommodation, make it the perfect place to spend a few days or even a few weeks.

Typically my Ubud Bali days begin with gentle sunshine and bird song, followed by a couple hours of yoga practice, a delicious and healthy lunch, a massage in the afternoon, and then a sunset drink at my Ubud villas. Sounds pretty nice, right? This is what makes me to look forward to every visit. Perhaps I will see you there someday!
